All in the Name of Good
Health; DPM Student’s take Steps in Helping the Community
By Elizabeth Valente
Allen Temple Baptist Church
held its annual Health Fair in Oakland. City leaders
consider the event one of the largest free screenings in the
City. Various vendors, sponsors and organizations, and
schools like
Samuel Merritt University (SMU) were present and
assisting participants with various medical and
health-related questions.
Several SMU students in the
Doctor of Podiatric Medicine program were on hand at the
health fair as volunteers, along with their supervising
faculty Alison Cook, DPM, MS and Trinh Pham, DPM both alums
from the
California School of Podiatric Medicine, a school within
the University. The focus was on preventative health in foot
care, a campaign started by Allen Temple Church member and
podiatrist Sharon Burleigh, DPM. She assisted in publicizing
the free foot screenings throughout the ministry and Oakland
community and in gathering the supplies needed.
“Prevention is primary,”
explains Dr. Cook. “That's one of the main reasons we do
these screenings, we are here to help, to provide education
and for people to learn more about their health, foot
conditions and more about what to do prevent further
progression of disease or future injuries.”
The California School of
Podiatric Medicine Alumni and Associates are proud to present
their 2011 CME Lecture and Workshop Series brochure.

In March, Governor Corbett
proposed a dramatic reduction of more than 50
percent to Temple's annual appropriation. Under
this proposal, the university would lose more
than $90 million in funding from the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. These funds are
critical to Temple's students, faculty, research
programs, employees and healthcare enterprise.
The loss of this commonwealth support would
fundamentally change Temple University.
Since his announcement, thousands of members of
the Temple community have communicated their
support for Temple through countless e-mails,
letters, office visits, and through the media.
As members of the General Assembly continue to
negotiate and craft the budget for the next
fiscal year, we need your voice!
If you have not already done so, please join
the Temple
Advocates Legislative Outreach Network
(TALON) to contact your legislators, and add
your personal experience to our sample letters.
As a graduate of Temple University, you provide
a crucial perspective on the impact of a Temple
education, and the importance of Temple
University to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Thank you for standing with Temple. Please share
this message with your friends, former
classmates, co-workers and family, and encourage
them to advocate for Temple.
